Doctor Assisted Suicide: The Spiritual Perspective

Doctor Assisted Suicide: The Spiritual Perspective

In this post we are going to discuss about the recent regulations in Canada which have made doctor assisted suicide legal, though strict conditions apply to who can opt for such extreme choice. Of  course this is not the first country to make such law but it exists in few other countries as well. So today we are going to take a look at the spiritual aspects of such regulations.

The Debate

Needless to say, this is a highly debatable matter where there are lot of perspectives involved such as ethical perspective, legal perspective and so forth. We will not repeat the points put forth by both sides as they are quite intuitive. The supporters will say that one has right over his/her life so the decision to take it should be based on the opinion of the person while those against such laws will say that we cannot take what we cannot give.

However we will today focus on what is the spiritual perspective of Saints and sages on this issue. Of course we cannot discuss this directly as we cannot compare the situation with the ancient past, but we can use the theories proposed by the masters to gauge this law from the humanitarian standpoint.

Taking Life: Is It Justified?

This dilemma exists even our everyday lives where we are faced with such conflict situations as to taking a life is justified or not. We need to kill pests and other insects to save our homes and crops. We might argue that taking human life is different but as far as nature is concerned, all life forms have equal right to live and survive on this planet.

Law of Karma

Committing suicide is considered to be the greatest blunder. The law of karma puts everyone in tough circumstances but those who lose heart on battlefield of life find an easy way out. Yet it only adds to the already existing tough karmas as the soul is immortal and the law of karma ensures that you are certainly held accountable to whatever you do, so you cannot escape. Of course there is a way out from getting released from this constant cycle of reincarnation through union with the self. Right-To-Die

But we are talking about any common person here who wants to die due to certainly medical condition and cannot tolerate life. He or she will certainly endure pain even in the subsequent birth though they may not realize so.

Doctor Assisted Suicide

Suicide is a suicide whether it is done by own self or with the help of anyone. When we are talking of morality the sanction by law of the land does not necessary ensure that the action is also correct from the spiritual perspective. Yet such situations exist in several areas such as killing others. A soldier who kills others on a battlefield is served with honours and titles while a person killing other without permission is hanged to death or prosecuted.

So the answer is……?

It is not possible to give the answer of such question in simple yes or no format. From the spiritual perspective, this will not help at all (right and wrong is a different matter) since it will not end the karmic seeds of the person so it will just prolong his/her pain by carrying forward the karmic reactions.

But from the humanitarian perspective it might just be good to end the suffering even if temporarily so that there is a period of break between this birth and the next which can be used to re energize oneself. So in the opinion of the editor, such laws can be implemented but care needs to be taken that they are only applied in the rarest of the rare cases and no one tends to take advantage of any such regulations.
